The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is a form that determines your eligibility for financial assistance. You'll input basic information, including your Social Security number, previous years' taxes, and bank statements. You'll also choose to send the application to certain colleges, and those schools will use the information to determine your financial aid package.

You can send your FAFSA to up to 10 schools, though you can add and remove schools throughout the process. Read more about all the steps you need to take to apply for the FAFSA. To learn more about how to add schools, keep reading.

How do you input your high school information?

Start the process by finding your high school on the form and adding it to the application.

You can use this search box to find the high school you attended.

After you choose your school, you're set to move on to the next part of the application.

How do you select the colleges you want to send your FAFSA to?

If you know what colleges you're interested in, have applied to, or have been accepted by, you can add them to the form here. You can add a college by searching information about it, like its location or name, or by entering its federal ID, if you know it.

Here's where you search for different schools to add to your FAFSA.

The upper left hand corner will show you how many schools you have selected, and you can check the boxes next to the schools you're interested in to add them to your FAFSA.

You can select up to 10 school through this portal.

Next, you'll need to select what type of housing plan you're going to do, as this will impact how much financial aid you're projected to receive. You can reorder which schools are on your list with the buttons on the lefthand side of the screen.

This doesn't matter for federal aid, but can impact if you qualify for state aid. For instance, in Connecticut, you need to list a school located in the state within the first two positions to be eligible for state aid.

You can reorder schools on your list and remove them as well.

What if you want to send your FAFSA to more than 10 schools?

Once you've submitted your FAFSA, you'll receive a Student Aid Report, which summarizes the information on your FAFSA. After you receive that document, you can allow more than 10 schools to access that information through one of the following options:

Log into your FAFSA account and opt to make FAFSA corrections. Remove some of the colleges you put on your FAFSA, add the new schools, and send in the corrections for processing. The colleges you remove from this list will still have the data you submitted when you listed them on the form initially, but they won't have access to any updated information. In other words, you're not deleting the information from the college's system.
Call the Federal Student Aid Information Center and have them add the colleges for you. You can reach them at 1-800-433-3243.
If you have a paper Student Aid Report, you can replace the listed colleges with other options and mail the document back to Federal Student Aid. The paper report only allows you to switch up to four colleges — not all 10.

Picking which schools to send your FAFSA to isn't a difficult process, and you can always change your selections if you need to add different colleges to the list.
